Understand what DrSails® emergency epoxy adhesive is, and what four key features make it the "go-to" adhesive for professional sailors?

What is DrSails®

DrSails® is a two part epoxy adhesive and comes in a number of convenient sizes to suit a range of conditions from daily use in the boat yard to an emergency toolkit for regatta dinghy sailors.

With an international patent, DrSails® is based on a new adhesive technology developed in the Engineering Materials Group (GEMAT) of the IQS-URL. With a brief to develop the ideal nautical adhesive, the development team dedicated three years of R&D and on the water testing under the utmost extreme conditions to come up with a really outstanding, break-through product.

Key Features

The innovative nature of DrSails® has been recognised with the XXIX Creativity Award of the Catalan Engineers Association, and it was category winner at the 2014 Design Award at METS.

DrSails® has four key features which make it ideal for the marine environment:

Underwater – it can be applied and cured whilst completely submerged underwater. Not only is this incredible but very useful and reassuring in a marine emergency.

Structural - as a two part epoxy it can be used as a structural bond for virtually any material. It works with: wood, carbon, metals, plastics, neoprene, glass fibre and sail materials and has a bond strength of 160kg/cm2

Fast - full hardening can be achieved at room temperature in 22 mins. Therefore, in an emergency situation, a complete structural repair can be achieved quickly and simply using DrSails®

Flexible - this key feature truly makes DrSails® a "must-have" in any on-board repair kit. Its flexibility and strength means that it can be used to securely bond two pieces of sailcloth of any type e.g. spinnaker nylon, Dacron or laminate.

Who's using it

This exceptional performance is very quickly becoming recognised by professional offshore sailors. DrSails® has been used on-board the majority of boats in the last Barcelona World Race, Vendee Globe and Volvo Ocean Race.

Professional boatyards are increasingly using it to de-clutter their workshops. It allows them to reduce their bonding agents and epoxy’s to just one – DrSails®.

So, if you are preparing your offshore toolkit to deal with any emergency then DrSails® is quickly creeping to the top of the list of “essentials”.
