A winch handle is just a winch handle - right? It’s true, but when buying a new one, there are a few things you need to consider.
The main variables include:
- Length - Most winch handles come in two standard sizes, 8-inch (203mm) for speed and 10-inch (254mm) for power.
- Grip - Different manufacturers offer varying grip types. The winch handles that we sell are available in single, full double grip, high grip (a compromise between single and double) and increasingly popular, Palm grip. This allows comfortable single handed use at low loads and a good double grip for grinding.
- Bearings - Ball bearings are considered standard these days to minimises friction, enabling the sailor to get the best out of their winches.
- Locks – Winch handles are available with locking and non-locking mechanisms, Although the non-locking type are easy to remove, they risk getting lost overboard. Locks offer a secure fit and are increasingly available in ergonomic, one-handed operation levers on the shaft.
Single Grip Full Double grip Palm Grip + Quick-Lock
Current trends are for 10 inch (254mm) handles, to maximise the power output, palm grips for comfort / efficiency and one-hand operated locking systems. Having said that, there are many unique situations where an alternative might be more appropriate.
We offer various brands of winch and set out below are just a few of the more specific details about each type.
Andersen
These robust winch handles have been fabricated in polished stainless-steel to provide the perfect transfer of power and functionality for cruising. They are strong, yet relatively light, and all come with a standard button locks. They have single, high and double grips but their latest Auto-Lock range incorporates a palm grip and advanced locking mechanism.

We also have a small selection of winch handles from Barton and Karver.
Karver
The Karver Winch Handle is a 100% carbon fiber handle that is both lightweight and stiff. Its innovative locking system can be used by both left and right-hand users, and its exchangeable octagonal tip is made of stainless steel for extended life and protection against winch anodization. The handle also has a double stainless steel ball on stainless steel tracks and comes in two lengths, 199mm and 254mm. The handle can fit all competitor winches on the market and is available with or without a speed grip.

Barton
The Barton Winch Handle is available in two different materials and sizes. The 280mm long handle is made of extruded aluminum and does not have a locking mechanism. It is designed for light duty and has an easy-grip roller handle with an anodised finish. However, it is not recommended for use on two-speed winches or loads in an anti-clockwise direction. The 235mm long handle is made of plastic and features a locking mechanism with a positive, easy action thumb switch. It is designed to float and has a SWL of 40kg, making it suitable for lightweight use only.

We also offer two electric winch handle alternatives called the E-Wincher and the Iwinch
E-wincher
The Ewincher 2 is an electrically assisted handle that improves cranking speed, torque, and runtime. It is designed to support natural movements, increase power and speed with less effort, and maintain an ideal posture. It offers three modes: electric, manual, and combined, allowing for various winch speeds. The Ewincher 2 comes with a battery, charger, inverter, winch, cockpit mounting bracket, and carry bag. It doesn't require converting a manual winch to electric.

iWinch
The iWinch bit is a winch socket and drill bit combination that adds powered assistance to an existing winch, requiring a drill with a 13mm chuck and around 90Nm of torque. It is an affordable alternative to power up a winch but depends on the drill powering it.
