However, whilst some hardware has a clear place and purpose on a boat – such as hanks, locks and blocks – when it comes down to choosing between a cleat, clutch or jammer it can be hard to know which to go for. There is somewhat of a debate over the use of drum locks on a continuous line furling drum.

As it says on the tin, a drum lock is designed to lock a continuous line furling drum in place, in order to prevent accidental unfurling – which can be inconvenient and potentially dangerous.

Most modern boats today have a form of top-down furling. If you don’t already use this method of sail handling, it’s worth considering a retrofit. Compared with hoisting and dropping spinnakers and gennakers in the conventional way, and all the potential for mistakes that go with that, top-down furling is a much more user-friendly and less risky way of handling big downwind sails.
